For Educators

Educators who teach about sexuality face many challenges from dealing with community controversy to finding up-to-date information and creating lessons that will resonate with young people. SIECUS has many resources to ensure that educators have both the information and the resources they need to help young people grow up to be sexually healthy adults. Throughout our website there are links to the latest and most relevant research, public policy analyses, lesson plans, professional development opportunities, and other resources.

The following is a list of selected resources from SIECUS that may be of particular interest to educators.

SexEdLibrary.org
SIECUS created this website to provide educators who teach about sexuality with the tools they need to effectively reach young people. It includes lessons, curricula, research, and professional development opportunities.

For almost two decades, SIECUS has published the Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education: Kindergarten–12th Grade to help educators create new program and evaluate existing curricula. The Guidelines, developed by a national task force of experts in the fields of adolescent development, health care, and education, provide a framework of the key concepts, topics, and messages that all sexuality education programs would ideally include.

Curriculum Bibliography
Today, there are many resources that can help educators address the key concepts and topics contained in the Guidelines.  This bibliography, housed on our SexEdLibrary.org site, contains information on commercially available curricula, compilations of lesson plans, and resources that provide background information and ideas for educators.

The Community Action Kit provides advocates with the tools they need to become knowledgeable about sexuality education, build support in their state or community, work to implement sound policies, and institute or defend an effective comprehensive sexuality education program. The Kit is designed to serve as a tool for all advocates whether they are students, parents, teachers, school administrators, health professionals, youth-serving professionals, policymakers, or concerned community members.

Each year, SIECUS compiles research on sexuality education and abstinence-only-until-marriage programs in all fifty states and the District of Columbia. The State Profiles provide educators, advocates, and policymakers with a snapshot of laws and policy, current events, and statistics, as well as a detailed explanation of how federal funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs is being spent in each state.

SIECUS’ public policy department tracks major events and decisions on Capitol Hill and across the country. Each month, we create these brief synopses to help parents, educators, and advocates stay up-to-date and informed. See all policy updates.

SIECUS tracks research related to sexuality education and sexual health. Our research updates summarize the findings and implications of the most relevant reports and articles so that colleagues, educators, and advocates can have the most up-to-date information even when they’re short on time. See all research updates.

Each month, we create brief articles on some of the controversies we have seen to help advocates and educators stay informed, understand trends, and respond to similar debates in their own community. See all community action updates as well as our year-end summaries.

Global Vision: Promising Resources From Across the World
SIECUS has created this resource to help educators and program developers around the world find the latest, most compelling, international sexuality education, HIV and AIDS prevention, and sexual reproductive health interventions and practices.  SIECUS has reviewed curricula, programs, campaigns, training modules, and other valuable tools.  On this page we provide educators with basic information on each program as well as links to the original resources.

As part of our new website, www.SexEdLibrary.org, SIECUS compiled lesson plans on each of the 39 topics suggested by our Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education. See a list of lessons by topics.
